John H. Smallwood Jr., 95, died January 2, 2019 at Clipper Harbor Home in Portsmouth, NH after a brief period of declining health. He was born August 25, 1923 in Paterson, NJ, son of the late John H. Smallwood and Margaret (McArdle) Smallwood.
John grew up in Paterson, NJ, one of 8 children. They moved to Lynn, MA during the depression. John graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1942. Months later, he enlisted into the US Army, became a pilot and fought during WWII. In 1945, he was both honorably discharged from active duty and he married the love of his life, Virginia Arsenault. Together they shared 50 years of marriage together until Virginia's passing in 1995. John worked for 40 years at General Electric, initially in Lynn and then later in Everett at their jet engine plant. He retired as a production foreman.
Mr Smallwood was a former communicant and active choir member at St. Mary’s Church in Beverly, MA. He is currently a communicant of St. Michael Church in Exeter, NH and he was formerly in the St. Michael choir.
John had many hobbies and likes, but above all was his fascination with the civil war and he and Virginia made several trips to Gettysburg. He could most often be found gardening, puttering, or doing woodworking carpentry. John was a pretty talented carpenter, so much that he built the camp on Lake Ossipee that the family spent many summers on and he built the addition on their family home. He was also a talented baker and was famous in the family for his pies and muffins.
In addition to his parents and his wife, John was predeceased by four siblings, Sallie Michaud, Robert Smallwood, James Smallwood and Herbert Smallwood.
He is survived by his son, "Jack" Smallwood, son, "Bob" Smallwood, daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Timothy Perry, 2 grandsons, John Perry, Samuel Perry, his longtime companion, Corinne Clifford, sister, Ellen Cameron, sister, Margaret "Bitsy" McGuirk, brother, Thomas Smallwood, and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Michael Church, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH.
Burial with military honors will be Monday, January 7, 2019 at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn, MA.
