Obituary

EXETER--- John L. Morgenthau Jr, died Saturday, March 9th 2019, at RiverWoods in Exeter.

He was born March 19, 1922, in New York City, New York, the son of the late John and Gladys (Benjamin) Morgenthau. He was raised all along the eastern seaboard. He was a graduate of Lawrenceville School, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree in Chemistry and Physics from Duke University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Rochester.

He met his wife, Kathryn, at Duke University. A short time later, they wed, and lived happily together for 68 years, residing principally in the greater Boston area and RiverWoods in Exeter, New Hampshire.

Mr. Morgenthau served two years in the US Navy during World War II, retiring as Lieutenant (jg) commissioned officer in 1946.

Mr. Morgenthau was one of three original founders of New England Nuclear Corporation of Billerica, Mass (now a division of PerkinElmer Inc.) the world's leading manufacturer of radioactive chemicals for research and radioactive pharmaceuticals for medical diagnosis. He also owned and operated an engineering design and machine shop in Exeter until age 92, and was an accomplished wood worker submitting pieces to fine woodworking crafts fairs throughout New England. He was an active member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Exeter, often playing flute recitals.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Estes of Clifton Park, NY: two sons Gregory Steven Morgenthau, Reidsville, NC, and Alan Scribner Morgenthau of Hampton, NH; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grand children.

He was predeceased by his wife Kathryn G. Morgenthau of Exeter who died in 2012 and one son John Morgenthau III of Tallahassee, Fa, who died in 2007.

SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held April 13, at 10:00am in the Great Room at RiverWoods, 7 RiverWoods Dr., Exeter.
