Shirley K. Phillips, formerly of Exeter, NH and Groveland, MA, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at her home, Webster at Rye in Rye, NH. She was born September 1, 1915 in West Newbury, MA to the late Olive and Arthur Knight. Shirley moved with her mother and sister Donna to Groveland, MA after her father passed away in 1920. She attended school in Groveland and thanks to a scholarship from the Groveland Salem State Teachers Club was able to attend Salem State College where she received her Teaching Certification in 1935.
Shirley met the late Edwin Phillips, her husband for 53 years during high school. They married in 1940 and enjoyed a wonderful life together. After college, Shirley taught elementary school in Topsfield, MA until her son Robert was born in 1955. After spending several years at home while Bob was growing up, she returned to school as an elementary school librarian in Groveland, MA.
Shirley and Ed retired in 1978 and spent more than 10 years as snowbirds, shuttling between Freedom, NH and Tarpon Springs, Florida with the seasons. In 1988, they settled in Exeter, NH where Ed passed in 1993. In 1999 Shirley moved to Webster at Rye where she resided until her passing. Shirley loved her time at Webster and enjoyed the friends she made among the residents and staff.
Shirley is pre-deceased by her sister, Donna Knight and survived by her son Bob, Hampton Falls, NH and her grandsons Jefferson Phillips and Jamie Phillips and her great-grandson Benjamin all of Fremont, NH as well as her nephew Richard Phillips, Williamsburg, VA.
Services: Family and friends are invited to attend a remembrance service at Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St, Exeter, NH on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 11:00 AM followed by a Celebration of Life Luncheon at the Exeter Inn.
