Charles J. Hartmann, 77, died peacefully in the home he built with his family by his side on Sunday, November 25, 2012 after a brief illness.
He was born on September 5, 1935 in Buffalo, NY, son of Charles John Hartmann and Elizabeth (Bermel) Hartmann.
He was a 1953 graduate of McKinley High School where he learned and pursued his interest in home building. He served in the United States Army for two years where he drove a weapons carrier vehicle known as a "deuce and a half".
Charles moved to Exeter, NH in 1957 and started Hartmann Construction Corp. where he built approximately 600 exceptional quality homes. He was also a part-time policeman for the Town of Exeter. He also received the title of Justice of the Peace, Notary Public, was a licensed plumber, electrician and commercial pilot.
He loved animals, woodworking, and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife of apx. 30 years, Margaret (Sanborn) Hartmann, son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jerrian Hartmann of Greenland, son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Diane Hartmann of Greenland, son, Andy Hartmann of Greenland, daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Chris Couture of Newfields, a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jerome H. Meidenbauer of Elma, NY, 8 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 10:00 AM at St. Michael Church, Exeter, NH.
Burial in Westview Cemetery, Hampton Falls, NH will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude's Children Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN. 38105.
