Evelyn May (Hubley) Zarnowski, 101, died January 11, 2013 in Dover, NH after a period of failing health.
She was born May 23, 1911 in Exeter, NH, daughter of the late Sanford S. and Bessie J. (Thurston) Hubley.
Evelyn lived the majority of her life in Exeter, NH. She dedicated many years to civil service in the town of Exeter and State of New Hampshire. Evelyn began her career as a deputy Town Clerk for 11 years before being elected the first female Town Clerk in Exeter. A position she held for 31 years. She was also the deputy Tax Collector for 27 years. Evelyn was a Selectman in Exeter for 9 years. She was an active member of the NH City and Town Clerks Association, serving as secretary for 10 years, and also as Vice President and President. She served as Chairman of the Seacoast for 27 years.
In addition to her professional career, Evelyn was also active in several organizations including, life member of the Exeter Council of Aging, Exeter area BPW, Exeter chapter AARP, Woman's Republican Club, Robinson Female Seminary Alumnae Association, and volunteer at the Exeter Area Chamber of Commerce and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
For her accomplishments, she deservingly received several awards including, the recipient of the Joseph D. Vaughn Award given to senior citizens for displaying leadership and meritorious achievement on behalf of the older citizens of N.H., received commendation from the Governor John H. Sununu for her 51 years of service to the town of Exeter and the Granite state, recipient of the AARP National Woman's History Month 1995 Award, received the NH BPW Woman of Achievement Award in 1994, and received the National Grange Certificate for Community Service in 1985. The Exeter Town Report was dedicated to her in 1977-1978.
Evelyn was the widow of Daniel J. Zarnowski, who died April 18, 2010.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Zarnowski of Sandy Spring, MD.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Exeter Cemetery.
