James J. O'Brien, 78, joined his Heavenly Father on March 2nd, 2017. He was born on April 23rd, 1938, in Exeter, NH, son of the late James Louis O'Brien and Valeria Ann Barber (Babavicius) of Exeter. Jim grew up in Exeter and was a graduate of the Exeter High School, Class of 1956.
In 1958, he began his Naval Career that lasted 30 years of both active and inactive service. His Naval career included sea service on the USS EVANS DE 1023, USS BRIDGIT DE 1024, USS REEDBIRD MSCO 51, USS KRISHNA ARL 38, USS FULTON AS 11, and the USS GRAND CANYON AD 28. His service also included two tours in the Vietnam War, in-country at Saigon, Cat Lo, Nha Be, DaNang, Cua Viet, and Sa Huynh. In 1970 he married Elaine Gilman of Kingston and continued his career with the support of his loving wife. In 1974 he advanced to Chief Petty Officer, and completed his active career aboard the USS COONTZ DDG 40. After his retirement ceremony onboard the USS CONSTITUTION in 1982, he transferred to the Fleet Reserve until 1988. Afterwords as a civilian he worked many years at the Exeter Hospital as a steam plant operator, and afterward as the Pub-Maintenance Man at the Redhook Ale Brewery at Pease Tradeport. During his retirement he lived life to the fullest, and you could find him and his loving companion riding horses, going to dances, fixing up the camp, playing cards at the VFW, and working in the garden.
Jim is survived by his loving companion, Elaine Babineau of Haverhill, MA, his daughter Catherine O'Brien and her husband Ian McPhee of Plaistow, his daughter Mary O'Brien of Fremont, his granddaughter Shannon McPhee of Plaistow, his sister, Rita (Toni) Pease and her husband Jerry Pease of Orford, and many nieces and nephews.
Jim will lay to rest next to his late wife at the Gilman Monument at the Greenwood Cemetery in Kingston.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH.
A funeral service will be on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at 10:00 AM, at the First Congregational Church of Kingston, 6 Church St., Kingston, NH. Rev. David Thomas will officiate.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, North Rd., Kingston, NH.
