Eileen (Bradley) Foley, age 94, died May 10, 2017 at Riverwoods, Exeter, NH. She was born on April 19, 1923 in Medford, MA, the daughter of the late James Anthony and Eileen (Harrington) Bradley. A resident of Riverwoods for the past 9 years, Eileen grew up in Union, NJ and summered in Marblehead and Hull, MA. She also formerly resided in Maryland, Kentucky, Venezuela, and Maine.
Eileen graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Mathematics. While at Michigan, she met and became engaged to Army Second Lieutenant John T. Foley. War orders for John changed their traditional wedding plans and Eileen, her mother and future mother-in-law boarded a train for Abilene, TX, where Eileen and John married on December 2, 1944, the beginning of an adventurous, happy, nomadic, and children centered family life. Her children still get a loving laugh remembering Mom running down a Venezuelan runway, four children trailing behind, calling after a slowly moving away prop plane on which we were supposed to be passengers. We did make the flight!
As her children grew older, Eileen taught math to junior high and high school students in Venezuela. Upon retirement from Venezuela, Eileen spent summers cruising New England waters with John, on their sailboat, eventually settling in the Rockland, ME area, where family and friends were frequent visitors. In Rockland, Eileen was a docent at Farnsworth Art Museum, a Literacy Volunteer, and tutored math at the local schools. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, needlework, drawing and painting. Eileen and John were enthusiastic travelers, touring the Americas, Europe and the South Pacific by land and sea. Eileen's even temper, good humor, and interest in others made her a favorite with family and friends.
Eileen was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, John, on July 3, 2012. She is survived by her three daughters, Susan McCann of Portsmouth, NH, Janet Foley of Lynn, MA, and Christine and husband Robert Benny of Wellesley, MA; her son, John T. Foley Jr. and wife Heather of Darien, CT; seven grandchildren, Jay McCann, Kristin McCann, Heidi and husband James Zenyuh, Leanne and husband Matthew Carpenter, Hannah Foley, John T. Foley III, Herbert Mayo and wife Tracy; seven great grandchildren, Helena, Quinn and Nolan Zenyuh, Avery and Haylee Carpenter, and Alyssa and Brianna Mayo; her brother James Anthony Bradley and wife Patricia, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son-in-law Roland L. McCann, sister-in-law Catherine Cusack and brother-in-law Francis Cusack.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 11:00 AM, at St. Michael Church, 9 Lincoln St., Exeter, NH. Following the service, Eileen's family invites guests to a luncheon at Riverwoods, Founder's Parlor, 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, NH.
The Foley family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at Riverwoods Retirement Community for their attentiveness and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Farnsworth Art Museum, 16 Museum St., Rockland, ME 04841. An online guest book is available at www.brewittfuneralhome.com
