Major Frances L. Swallow, Ret., 93, died August 5, 2017 at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home, Fremont, NH. She was born January 27, 1924 in Boston, MA., daughter of the late Leslie Otis Swallow and Josephine (Gibbons) Swallow.
Frances grew up in Kingston, NH and she graduated from Sanborn Seminary, Class of 1942. Frances then completed a secretarial course from Mcintosh Haverhill Business College in 1944. She enlisted into the US Navy WAVES in 1944 and served honorably until August, 1946 during WWII. Frances attended the University of NH from 1946-1949 where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and earned her bachelor of science degree. She re-entered and served in the US Navy Waves from 1951-1954 during the Korean Conflict. Frances enjoyed a very long and distinguished career in the United States Army earning her rank of Major and retired on January 1, 1971. Frances received numerous meritorious awards and thanks during her career for her "dedication, integrity, and intense devotion to her work". Frances served as Assistant Information Officer and Information Officer at Ft. Dix where she was directly responsible for the unprecedented number of highly professional Hometown News Releases that covered personnel assigned to the Seattle defense. Her outstanding achievements in this field along with photographic coverage and news releases of all noteworthy events associated with the 26th Artillery Group, have contributed immeasurably to the Army Public Relations program. Many of these achievements were successfully completed by devoting much time and effort in preparation during off-duty hours.
She was a longtime active member of the Rebekah's. She was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Kingston where she enjoyed singing. Frances was an avid supporter of the UNH Women's Hockey Team. Frances's favorite eatery for the last 20 years was at the Kingston House of Pizza.
She is survived by her cousin, Patricia and Joseph Clark of Winthrop, MA., and close friends, Candace Paine, Robert Lafontaine, and Georgia Gerakas.
A calling hour will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 AM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, NH.
Funeral services will follow on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
Burial with military honors will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Kingston, NH.
