Gertrude “Trudie” Ida Butler, 95, of North Road, died on December 20, 2017, at her home.
She was born in Newton, New Hampshire, December 7, 1922, daughter of the late Everett O. and Florence (Hoyt) Kelly. She was a graduate of Sanborn Seminary Class of 1939 and the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She continued her education to receive her Bachelor in General Studies from UNH School of Life Long Learning in 1976. Trudie worked as a registered nurse until 1976 and worked in hospitals in many of the locations wherever she lived around the country. Her life of service also included being a Girl Scout leader and church organist. After retiring from nursing, she was a legislator in the New Hampshire General Court for 10 years in the 1980’s, serving on the Health and Human Services Committee. She used her nursing education to help with being the Health Officer for the Town of Fremont for many years and was very active in the town with the boy scouts, starting the town newspaper and the Universalist Society to hold the Old Home Day Service yearly at the Old Meeting House. Trudie loved to travel and being the wife of a career Naval Officer, she traveled across the country 5 times, and overseas and around the world, living in New Delhi, India for 2 ½ years. She always maintained her New Hampshire residency and felt it was the best place to live even after seeing so much of the world. After retirement, her traveling companion was her sister-in-law, Marion Kelly and they visited many different places together, from Alaska to Columbia, South America to Puerto Rico and many different states. She was a member the Toastmasters International Club, speaking group, the National Order of Women Legislators- OWLS, and the Dartmouth Alumni Group as a widow. She loved to garden, bird watch and help others. Trudie was an active member of the Brentwood Baptist Church and provided the flowers for the services from her gardens for many years.
Trudie was predeceased by her husband, William S. Butler and her son William R. Butler. She is survived by 2 daughters, Bonita Freeman and Judith and her husband, Albert Peterson of Fremont, 8 grandchildren, Cyndi Nielson, Adam Freeman, Jennifer Butler, William Butler, Robert Butler, Brian Butler, Philip Peterson and Jeremy Peterson, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, John Butler and his wife, Eleanor Butler of Lexington, MA and her daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Butler. She was predeceased by her brother Donald Kelly of Newton, NH and sister and her husband, Florence and Lorne Stairs of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
There will be a memorial service held as a celebration of her life on Sunday, December 31, 2017, at 2:00 PM, at the Brentwood Baptist Church, 201 North Road, Brentwood, NH. Rev. James Barnes will officiate.
