Robert E. (Bob) Gootee, retired US Army Chief Warrant Officer and Postal Supervisor, died January 13, 2018 in his home surrounded by loved ones.
He was born in Salisbury, Maryland on 11 September 1930, the son of James Edward and Lelia Doris (Jones) Gootee.
Mr. Gootee served over 20 years in the US Army as CWO3. He served in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Mariana Bonin Islands, Korea, and in Vietnam as a Military Assistance Commander with MACV-SOG before retiring in 1969. Bob received numerous awards and citations during his career, including a Bronze Star. He was a true Patriot and loved his Country and fellow service members. He was a member of the American Legion, DAV and VFW.
After retiring, Bob worked at Mars Bargainland in Newington,NH; Becker Real Estate in Portsmouth, NH; and Westinghouse Corporation at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, ME. He was a US Postal Safety Officer in South Berwick, ME and Postal Operations Analyst in Portsmouth, NH. In 1985 the family moved from Portsmouth to Stratham, NH and within a year Bob had his first open heart surgery. After the operation, he served as a part time clerk at the Greenland, NH Post Office, retiring in 1987.
Survivors include his beloved widow and friend for 63 years, Arlene June (LaChapelle) Gootee of Stratham; a son Michael Edward, and his ex-wife Joan Cullen and daughters Emma and Hanna of Stratham; a daughter, Lelia Anne LaPlante, and her husband Norman of South Berwick, ME., their children Andre Norman and wife Rachel of Eliot, ME and Leah Renee and husband Shawn Richardson, and step-daughter Haley of Dover, NH; a daughter, Debra June Weeks of Portsmouth and her children, Lindsey Rachael of Cincinnati, Ohio and Richard Dawson III of Portland, ME.; a son Mark Thomas of Stratham and his children, Aaron Thomas and Andrea Mariah of Kittery, ME.; also great-granddaughters, Cecilia Ruth, Norah Elle and Molly June LaPlante; a sister, Doris Lee (Stanley) Bradley of Salisbury, MD.; and a nephew Thomas Bradley of Leesburg, VA.
Mr. Gootee was predeceased by his parents and two half-sisters, Bonita Claire Cavender (James) of Topsail Beach, NC and Julia Mae Lund (William) of Louisiana; a beloved nephew, Daniel (Bunk) Bradley and son-in-law AF MSGT Richard D Weeks, Jr.
Bob was a true soldier and honored veteran who loved this country and his family with all his heart.
A burial service with Military honors at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire will be private at his request. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital ( or help a needy veteran at
