Marion Hodgdon Clare, 84, of Exeter, NH died on May 21, 2008 after a long struggle with cancer. She was born in Portsmouth, NH , the daughter of Chauncey Cheever Hodgdon and Mildred Walker Hodgdon. She is the widow of her high school sweetheart, Wendell Phillips Clare. Jr., who died in 2000. They were married for 57 years. Their daughter Wendy also died in 2000.
Marion was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and the Plymouth School. She was a member of the North Church of Portsmouth serving on many committees. She was president of the Thomas Bailey Aldrich Association and the Chase Home for Children. She was a member of Strawberry Banke, Inc., the Portsmouth Hospital Corporation and the Hospital Guild of which she served as president. She served as chairperson and director of Volunteers of the Hospital.
For twenty-five years she resided in Pawtucket, RI where she was a member of the Central Congregational Church serving on many committees. She was a director and life member of the RI Hospital.
Upon moving to Exeter, NH Marion was a hospital volunteer and a Friend of the Exeter library.
Marion is survived by a daughter Lee-Lee Schlegel and husband John of Milbridge, ME, and her son Bud Clare and wife Penny of Lee, NH as well as six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, her brother Richard and his wife Shirley Hodgdon of Portsmouth, NH and a sister-in-law Mary Lou Hodgdon of Portsmouth. Philip W. Hodgdon, Marion's brother, predeceased his sister by one day.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 14th at the North Church Parish House, Spinney Rd., Portsmouth, NH. at 10AM. Immediately after the service, memories of Marion will be shared over coffee.
